 What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical term term encompassing several procedures aimed at improving the look of the lower and upper lid region of the eye. Blepharoplasty is quickly become one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed today. When surgery is done on the upper lid it is usually to eliminate excess fatty deposits causing the eyes to puff up. When the skin stretches and it begins to droop what often happens is the reduction of the patients visual field. Patients who suffer from visual loss due to droopy eyelids can recover most if not all of their vision from having Blepharoplasty. The lower lid surgeries usual correct dark bags under the eye as well as droopy lower lids. Eyelid rejuvenation consists of Blepharoplasty used in conjunction with fat and other fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm to replenish the lost volume to improve the hollows of the eye area that occur with aging.
What procedure is best for me?
At Younique Cosmetic Surgery we offer full service eyelid rejuvenation. Because of the individual circumstances that are unique to each case it is impossible to determine which procedure or combination of procedures will be needed until you have your consultation with the doctor. During your consult all of your Blepharoplasty options will be thoroughly explained and discussed with you.
Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure done in the Doctors office and usually only takes a couple of hours. Here at younique we use the CO2 laser to make the incisions optimizing recovery and minimizing bleeding. The incision is made in the natural crease of the eyelid and one fine stitch is used to close the tiny wound.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Dr. Mark Youssef believes in using dermal fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane, or your own body fat to replenish the lost volume around the eyes. When used in conjunction with the lower lid lift the signs of tiredness and aging disappear. This combined approach tends to help avoid the operated look and create a very natural youthful almond shape to the eye.
The procedure for the lower eyelid lift is done on an outpatient basis in our office. The procedure takes only one to two hours and is done with a local anesthetic. Fatty tissue is removed through a transconjunctival approach which means that the surgery is performed through the inside part of the eyelid so that no external visible scar is created.
The skin is then tightened using the CO2 laser resurfacing. If a significant amount of skin drooping is present Dr. Youseff may opt to make the incision underneath the lash line so it can be hidden more easily. Excess skin is removed through the incision and a tiny absorbable stitch is placed to close the incision.

What can I expect?
Recovery is generally between 5-6 days. During the first few days of healing you may experience some swilling, bruising, dry eyes or discomfort. Cold compresses along with medication will control any pain you may have. Keep the incision site clean and dry and apply ointment as directed by your doctor. The recovery from this procedure is minimal, most patients report returning to work within one week. It will take several weeks to see the full results of your eyelid surgery, and up to a year for the incision scar to fade away. But your results will last many years.
What risks are involved?
There are potential risks with associated with every surgical procedure. You will be fully informed of the potential risks to your health by your doctor the during your consultation. He will discuss with you and help you decide if the benefits out weigh the risks.
Side effects are usually mild and only last a short period of time. These risks include but are not limited to blurred or impaired vision, dry eyes, difficulty closing your eyes, bleeding (hematoma), poor wound healing, infection as well as numbness and changes in skin sensation around the eyes.
Are there non-surgical alternatives?
Non Surgical Eye Rejuvenation or Volume Replacement can improve small bags and dark circles without surgery. Either a dermal filler or your own body fat is used for the procedure. Fat is better if a lot of volume has been lost, injecting it into your face around the eyes will help achieve a natural and rejuvenated look. Using your own body fat also reduces the chance of your body rejecting the treatment. Synthetic fillers are better suited for younger patients with thicker skin.
