What is Rhinoplasty ?
Rhinoplasty is more commonly referred to as a “nose job.” The procedure is used to change the shape, size or contour of the nose.  Many people are self-conscious about their nose. These are the people who usually elect to have rhinoplasty to refine their features or improve their profile. Rhinoplasty can help reduce or increase the size of your nose as well as change the shape of the bridge, narrow the nostrils, or change the angle between the nose and lip. Rhinoplasty has helped hundreds of thousands of people across the globe achieve the look they desire. Rhinoplasty can be combined with other surgical procedures during reconstructive facial surgery or as part of a full cosmetic make over.

This procedure is also used to help improve medical conditions or irregularities that may impair breathing.  Rhinoplasty also allows shaving of bony humps from the bridge and the re-alignment of the nasal bones to help alleviate related discomfort. One of the most common conditions that can be corrected with this surgery is a deviated septum, which can lead to breathing problems, chronic stuffiness, post-nasal drip and snoring. It is also used to correct trauma and birth defects.

What is the Rhinoplasty procedure?
There are several different methods and techniques your surgeon can use during your surgery. The length of the surgery depends on which methods he decides to use to achieve your desired results. Typically though, rhinoplasty only lasts one to two hours.

There are two approaches one can employ for Rhinoplasty; Open and Closed. Dr. Youssef will decide which method will suit your particular needs the most. If he decides to work from inside the nostrils he is using the “Closed Method.” If he decides to use the “Open Method,” he will make the incision across the strip of tissue that separates your nostrils. The Open method is more commonly used because it gives the surgeon more room to work. With either method once your surgery is done a splint will be put on your nose to help support the new shape.

What risks are associated with Rhinoplasty?
As with any major surgery, there are risks and side effects associated with Rhinoplasty.  It is common to experience moderate pain for the first few days.  Side effects are usually mild and don’t last long. If you experience recurring nosebleeds, severe pain when breathing through your nose, numbness in and around your nose, or signs of infection contact your doctor.

What can I expect after my Rhinoplasty?
Your road to recovery begins almost immediately after your nose surgery. A small splint will be placed on your nose to protect it and to keep it stable for at least five to eight days. Nasal packing may be used to help reduce swelling and bleeding. This packing is placed inside your nose during surgery and removed the morning afterward. It is not uncommon to experience moderate discomfort after your rhinoplasty for the first 48 hours. You may also feel very stuffed up after your surgery. You can take a decongestant to help you breathe easy.

There will be some bruising and swelling in the days and weeks after your nose surgery. You may even develop two black eyes. Cold compresses can be applied to ease swelling and promote healing. You must sleep on your back for a few weeks following surgery to avoid placing any pressure on your nose. Most patients report returning to work within 10 days of their surgery. Most of the swelling should heal up within two weeks, but it can take up to a year to heal completely.
